Wildlife on Zanzibar

Within the forested areas and especially on a spice tour, Zanzibar Island shows off its wealth of spices from turmeric to tamarind, cinnamon, coffee, and clove, to baobab sweets and some of Zanzibar’s exotic fruit selection such as mango and coconut.
Contained forest conservation areas like Jozani Forest contain the remaining native forestry of Zanzibar Island coupled with wildlife such as the endemic Red Colobus Monkey, the Servaline Genet, and, if you are extremely lucky, the possibly extinct Zanzibar Leopard. Bush Babies are endemic to the Island and can even be seen and heard in Stone Stone, jumping across the rooftops. Prison Island just off Stone Town conserves a unique colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, with some members over a century old.

However, a rich wildlife can also be found in Zanzibar’s beautiful and famed tropical waters where untouched coral reefs are inundated with baracudas, marlin, turtles, countless tropical fish, and sometimes even a reef shark or pod of inquisitive dolphins.
