Explore the Immersive Underwater World with Scuba Diving in Zanzibar
A Zanzibar holiday is often considered incomplete without experiencing scuba diving Zanzibar. With its pristine white sandy beaches, azure blue waters, and crystal-clear visibility underwater, Zanzibar offers much more than just beach relaxation. While you can sunbathe, sip coconut water, and read a book on the shore, make sure to dive into the vibrant marine life and explore the stunning coral reefs and underwater features during your diving Zanzibar adventure.
There are many reasons why scuba diving Zanzibar is a must-do during your holiday. First, Zanzibar is home to numerous world-class dive sites, all easily accessible from your beach hotel. Unlike other destinations in Africa or beyond, scuba diving Zanzibar is considered very safe, with no dangerous zones.
Diving Tanzania can be divided into two main regions: the islands and the Swahili Coast. The island region is especially renowned, with the Zanzibar Archipelago, including Zanzibar and Pemba, being the most popular diving locations. However, for those seeking exceptional diving experiences, Mafia Island, located further south of Zanzibar, offers some of the best dive sites in the region.
Snorkelling on the Swahili Coast
If you’re also interested in snorkelling, the Swahili Coast offers unique experiences. Many beach lodges along the coast provide boat trips and snorkelling excursions. Local fishermen are happy to take guests out in traditional dhow boats, which have been navigating the Indian Ocean for over 1,000 years. Learn how to sail these iconic wooden vessels before relaxing with a rod and tackle, or embark on a full-day deep-sea fishing trip for those looking for large game fish.
While on a dhow trip, you can snorkel over vibrant coral reefs, encountering a world of colour and texture beneath the surface. Expect to see metallic-blue starfish, giant clams with royal-purple lips, and baby puffer fish swimming by. Amongst these coral gardens, you may spot a lionfish, its mane-like tentacles fanning out, or encounter the rare loggerhead turtle. The waters also shelter dolphins and occasionally whales, though sightings are rare.
The best times for scuba diving in Zanzibar are January through March. May and June are quite windy and thus not very favorable for scuba diving. But October is again a good time for scuba diving in Zanzibar. December through January can be extremely busy and you may end up spending a lot more. That is why many people prefer March as flights and accommodations are typically cheaper.
